Choosing a holistic lifestyle is one of the healthiest decisions you can make. By becoming more in tune with your actions, what foods you eat, how you manage waste, and adopting a positive mindset, you will benefit both your own body and mind as well as serve the environment. Living holistically can mean different things to everyone, and extends to almost every aspect of your life. We have a few tips to help get you started on the path to a holistic life.
1. Eat clean foods
Food is medicine and can be extraordinarily healing when you put the right foods into your body. Superfoods are among some of the best you can consume. These natural, nutrient-rich foods boost your energy, strengthen your immune system, and act as anti-inflammatory agents. From chia seeds and quinoa to leafy greens and berries, being wise with your diet can have a major impact on your overall wellness. If you primarily buy organic and local, you won't only be benefiting your body, but you'll be doing your part for Mother Nature.
2. Use natural remedies
Consider using natural remedies rather than always relying on pills and medications. While herbs, spices, essential oils, and supplements won't cure everything, they have many powerful properties that can reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and alleviate insomnia.
Just as important as your vitamins and supplements, CBD is becoming an increasingly popular natural remedy. Increasing research is being conducted to understand the impact of CBD, or cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound that comes from the cannabis plant. Initial studies suggest that CBD products offer healing properties, including pain relief, the reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety, and alleviating symptoms related to cancer, such as nausea. While this is the same plant that marijuana comes from, CBD has only trace amounts of THC (and sometimes none at all, depending on the product you choose), meaning you get all the benefits without experiencing the psychoactive effects of weed.
You can find CBD available in many forms, including hemp flowers, gummies, CBD oils, and tinctures. CBD tinctures are made from mixing CBD extract from the hemp plant with carrier oils like coconut oil, and sometimes a few drops of essential oil like peppermint or lavender. Tinctures are available in a range of strengths and can be taken orally, applied topically, or even mixed in with lotions. Instead of reaching for your pain killers or prescription medication, consider working a CBD product into your daily routine. Whilst painkillers and other medication are widely known for their side effects, this does not mean CBD is free of them too. Whilst rare, there are a small group of unfortunate people who suffer from cannabis psychosis on occasion. It would be worthwhile consulting a medical expert before consuming cannabis regularly or monitoring how you feel when using CBD products to ensure you're not putting your health on the line.
3. Get outside and stay active
Spending time outside and connecting with nature is integral to a holistic life. One way you can do this is by exercising outside. Hike in the mountains, do yoga in the park, or perhaps go for a bike ride. The exercise will naturally increase your dopamine and serotonin levels, while you get a daily dose of vitamin D and fresh air from being outside. Exercise can help you stay strong and fit, while reducing anxiety. Sunshine can also be a fantastic mood booster. By combining the two regularly, you're allowing yourself to unplug and reconnect to nature — and yourself.
4. Use low-impact products
Incorporate low-impact, environmentally friendly products into your routine. So often our household cleaners and cosmetic products are full of chemicals that are damaging to both our own health and the environment. From natural shampoos and soaps, to chemical-free cleaners, fill your house with products that are both people and earth-friendly.
Even something as simple as a dryer sheet can be harmful to your dryer, irritate your skin, and can leave a chemical residue on your clothing. If you want soft, fluffy clothes, ditch the dryer sheets and fabric softener and try organic dryer balls instead. Made sustainably from organic sheep wool, such dryer balls will soften your laundry and leave them static-free without the harmful side effects of chemical-based products. Both you and the environment will benefit from adopting these holistic practices.
5. Recycle
Recycling is a healthy habit and can be applied to many different aspects of your life. From something as simple as having a recycle bin for your plastic, paper, and glass waste, to composting your food waste to use in your garden, think twice before you throw items away. Donate old books, clothes, furniture, and electronics rather than just discarding them. Use reusable bags at the grocery store and produce stand to reduce waste. Habits like these will force you to be more mindful about your consumption and discarding habits, while being kind to the environment.
6. Be mindful and present
Leading a holistic life is incomplete without adjusting your attitude to fit your actions. Adopt a mindful mindset to become conscious of your actions and how they impact yourself and those around you. One of the best strategies you can develop is being present. If you're struggling to do so, set aside a small amount of time each day to practice simple breathing techniques, do a short meditation, or to journal. These practices will help you connect to your inner self and guide you in making sound decisions.
