How to Build a Stash of Breastmilk for Baby in the Freezer while Nursing

You may be a nursing mother too, and wondering to yourself how you can build up your milk supply to have a decent size freezer stash for emergencies or whatever reason you want to store your milk.

I hope that you find this post helpful as a mom.

It took me awhile with my now 23 month old to build a freezer stash for emergencies only, of milk. What helped for me was to nurse at the same time as I would pump on the opposite side. It will help get more out at a time.

Right now, I am 5 1/2 weeks into nursing our youngest and have 120 oz stored in our stand up freezer already! I have been asked several times how in the world I make time to store so much. Well, it's not really time consuming at all. I am a stay at home mom, so I don't have to worry about feeding bottles or anything unless I just want to or it's an emergency.

This was my freezer stash when I only had 96 oz stored.

I simply use a Medela Harmony Manual pump which can be found here for just $19.34! This is by far my FAVORITE to use, because it takes me maybe 5 minutes to get 3 - 5 oz when I choose to use it.

In the beginning, I had a Medela Pump In Style Advanced Double Electric pump you can get here for just $142.68, which was given to me around 37 weeks, by our insurance. But, after daily usage its motor died at 3 months postpartum. This was a good pump while it lasted though.

I called to see if they would replace it, but was told no. So, what did I do? I got a simple but very good quality manual pump by Philips Avent called the Comfort Manual, which can be seen here for just $26.66! This pump was such a lifesaver and helped me to be able to store 127 oz of breastmilk in the freezer for our youngest son. He didn't drink it until close to time I was going to wean him, after his first birthday in 2016.

I was sent a Spectra S2 double electric pump that you can find, here for just $115.99! I have not used this pump just yet but I will be giving it a try soon. I've heard wonderful things about it all around.

  1. I feel blessed that I made SO much milk! I donated everything I pumped because my babe was NOT having milk from another source, though. Kids are all so different!!!! I hope your B journey continues to be plentiful!!! <3
