Establishing Healthy Eating Habits

I was asked quite awhile back to write about establishing healthy eating habits, and I'm just now getting around to it.

I hope this will help you out a bit as a parent no matter if your child is just a toddler or going into school.

Our kids are 8 1/2, 8, and 17 months right now and they all eat pretty well. Has it always been easy to get them to eat good healthy foods? No, not really. When they were about I'd guess three or four years old, I brought up to my husband that we should try to get them to eat SALAD.

We all mostly enjoy scrambled eggs with a skillet mix full of peppers, onions, and diced potatoes.

Yes, I said salad for a 3 and 4 year old. Well, that was a good plan right? Except that I personally didn't like salad, but to show them that salad is a good food, I had to suck it up and eat it too. Go Mommy!

Some other foods that they started liking soon after that and even eat some of these now, at 8 and 8 1/2 are broccoli and carrots. They mainly will eat carrots if there is some ranch to dip it in, as well as they be baby carrots. Our youngest hasn't started to get picky with many foods yet.

  1. Salads are great for anyone I think! I was really lucky that when my kids were growing up I could feed them anything and they would eat it, well almost anything. They did like their veggies and eating healthy starts young, I was kinda a mean mom, because I deprived my kids of pop and sugar for the first couple of years. Kids eat what they get used to.

  2. Oh this is every parent's dilemma. That stage when kids start becoming picky with their food can drive any parent crazy. We had to think of different ways to make vegetables look appetizing for them. We started with mixing veggies in their favorite smoothies. When they got used to the taste, we started introducing small chunks of vegetables. Now, they eat those veggies with no fuss at all. Yay!

  3. I love the way you sneak in your veggies in creative ways. I don't have kids yet, but I've got a husband who despises vegetables, so I have to be creative and dice them up for our omelettes too!

  4. It's so important to implement eating healthy habits at an early age. It's a great way to start off healthy diets for the long term.

  5. Interestingly enough we were talking about eating habits the other day. Growing up I never heard of the pickiness that I hear of now. My Mom raised us to eat what was on our plate or don't eat.

  6. I really wish I liked salads more. Everyone else in my family eats them like crazy, but I've yet to find a way to like lettuce. I do love fruit salads, though! I think it's smart that you're getting your kids into them early on.

  8. My kids grew up in a vegetarian house hold so we established sine pretty good eating habits. Of course, we had our treats and sweets but our main foods were healthy.

  9. Kids tend to do what we do. For a long time my son wouldn't try certain things just because I wouldn't either. So I started to and he's more willing to try new foods.
