Getting Kids to do Chores without an Allowance Involved

I was asked to do the topic getting kids to do chores without allowance involved, so here it is. I have two older kids who don't get an allowance. When they lose a tooth, the tooth fairy gives them $5 - 10 each time.

I have not really thought about chores with an allowance as our kids are almost 7 and almost 8 years old. They don't really have chores persay, they put their dirty clothes in their laundry hamper they have in their rooms. They put their bookbags for school by the door before bedtime. Otherwise, they don't really have chores to do yet.

We have change we save for vacation(s), but it's only for change not bills. We don't bother to count it until we have time frame set aside for when we want to do a family vacation, usually to an amusement park, not the beach or anything big as we don't have any near by.

  1. I never earned an allowance growing up. I just helped when my mom asked. I don't think I was a spectacularly well-behaved child or anything, but all of my brothers and sisters knew we needed to help out.

  2. It's working in our household, so I'll hold onto this theory as long as possible.

  3. I never give my kids an allowance. They do their chores and I buy them stuff when they want it.

  4. Great tips. I earned an allowance as a kid... and now as a mom I am trying to figure it all out. :)

  5. My son is expected to take care of his space and do things around the house as needed. My husband and I throw any spare cash we have in our wallets at the end of the day in his piggy bank and then every other month we empty it out and add that as an extra deposit to his 529.

  6. I love this post. I struggle with even giving my kids chores because I'm just lazy sometimes. But they need to have some things they do "just because" and then some things they do for an allowance. That is my opinion. And I need to be better about the whole thing.

  8. I think it's important to teach kids the value of money and how to save for the future. An allowance does that.

  10. I think it's important for our kids to have an sense of ownership when it comes to keeping the house in order and chores are a great way of teaching that. I had an allowance when I was a kid. It taught me a lot about money management.

  11. I'm a believer that chores should be done to teach responsibility, not to earn money. My girls have chores and do not earn an allowance. They get money for gifts or when they need it.

  12. My grandkids all have chores but do not receive an allowance. Instead, they get their cell phones paid for.
