Pregnant at 66… Miracle or Mistake?

by Chit Chat Mom on May 20, 2009

pregnant-bellyWhen ChitChatMom read earlier this week that a 66 year old woman in England was pregnant I have to admit my first thought was… why? Now I believe that all life is precious and every baby is a miracle. What I can’t wrap my head around is whether or not it’s a miracle for a woman of that age to be pregnant or if it’s a mistake. Already I wonder if I will be one of the “older moms” when my kids start going to school and participating in activities like sports, band, etc..  I’ll be 35 or 36 by the time my first hits kindergarten.  That’s considerably older than the twenty-something moms I see pushing their babies around the mall. But what about this mom? She’ll be in her 70’s before her little one sets foot inside a classroom.  Is it unfair to her unborn child that she’ll be considered elderly before the kid is even a teenager… if she even lives that long?

The mom, Elizabeth Adaney is eight months preggers and conceived using IVF in the Ukraine (clinics in the US and Britain supposedly won’t perform the procedure on mothers over the age of 50). According to ABC News, Adaney is a successful businesswoman who doesn’t think that her age is all that relative.  She claims she feels like she’s 39.  Umm… I’m not sure I can buy that.  If I’m concerned about my age, and only half hers… maybe it does (or it should) matter.  Or maybe it only matters to me.  Like I said before, I believe that all life is precious and every baby is a miracle and I certainly wish Elizabeth’s child all the blessings in the world.  I’m just concerned that this mother and child aren’t going to have many quality years together.  But who knows.  Oprah’s health guru Dr. Oz says that those of us that take care of ourselves have a shot at living much longer lives.

So what do you mamas think… miracle or mistake to conceive at 66?
