After finishing my daily post yesterday I caught about fifteen minutes of The Today Show and saw a segment about the importance of securing your furniture to the wall that ChitChatMom thought every parent should see. As adults there are so many things that we don’t see as a potential threat to kids’ safety. But just watch the clip with Ann Curry and you’ll start to look at the furniture in your house (and probably everyone else’s) in a whole new way.
So much attention is paid to safety outside of the house. Carseats, bike helmets, hand sanitizer, etc.. But, when it comes to what happens inside your house are you doing the best thing for your child? Have you child proofed your house? Now I’ll admit that the “baby proofing” scene from last summer’s hit movie Baby Mama had me giggling. Amy Poehler wasn’t even showing yet and Tina Fey had baby proofed her entire house making it an impossible task for Amy to use the bathroom, therefore resorting to the sink. So maybe baby proofing while your baby (like mine) is in utero might be considered extreme. Then again, maybe not. Maybe the preggers portion of the program is the best time to do it. Fewer distractions might be just what you need. No feedings, no diaper changes, no spit ups to take you off task.
Take a few minutes and look at the items in your house from a child’s point of view. All of a sudden your bookcase might start to look like a jungle gym. Your flat screen TV looks pretty shiny… and we all know how kids like shiny things. Your nightstand is a treasure trove of all sorts of goodies that a two-year old can’t wait to explore. If it could potentially be pulled down on your child, causing injury or even death… isn’t it worth it to spend the time and the money to secure it to the wall?
I had mentioned anchoring our furniture to the wall to the hubby before yesterday’s segment. After we’d both watched it… we knew it was getting added to the “Daddy-Do” list. It fact, yesterday afternoon he made a stop at the Home Depot to pick up the supplies necessary to get started. We figure there’s no time like the present to start baby proofing the house. In might even come in handy for ChitChatMom… my sense of balance just ain’t what it used to be.
