Can a Recliner Work as a Rocking Chair in the Nursery?

by Chit Chat Mom on May 4, 2009

traditional-rocking-chairSo I woke up in the middle of the night last night with a question on my mind… can a recliner work as a rocking chair in the nursery?  Hmm.  I wonder.

Yesterday was a very successful Baby Sunday.  The hubby and I got the curtains hung, the shelves hung, all of the miscellaneous junk out of the closet in the nursery, the closet organizers put together and put in the closet… if it needed doing, we did it. Then throughout the evening we’d catch each other sneaking back into the room to look at it.  With the curtains hung, the room is starting to have more personality.  It’s starting to feel like “her” place, not just the room that used to be my office.  Now the only big item we’re missing is a rocking chair.

Since I love to shop, I’ve spent a lot of time looking at different rocking chair/ottoman combos.  I’ve been told by several girlfriends that having a good, comfortable rocking chair in the nursery is a must.  They’ve all mentioned that getting a padded chair with padded arms is essential, since both hubby and I will end up spending some serious quality time in the chair with the baby girl. My only hesitation is what in the world will I do with this chair after the baby girl has grown out of needing to be rocked. Expecting that we’re likely to have more than one child, I realize that the chair will get used again… but what happens after the last child?  So my question to all you experienced mamas is… can a recliner work as a rocking chair in the nursery?

I’ve seen several rocking/gliding recliners and thought maybe one of those would be the way to go.  If I buy one in a style that integrates into the design of the rest of the house then it could potentially be moved and used elsewhere in the future.  The price difference comes out to about $100.  I’d be willing to spend a $100 more on a recliner so that I could use it in the future.  The only question is… am I shooting myself in the proverbial foot by not going with the standard issue baby rocking chair?  To me it seems that a rocking recliner is great until you get in the reclined position and can’t rock anymore, baby wakes up, wants to be rocked and you’ve got to drop the handle and start all over again.

glider-from-bruI’ve actually registered for a more traditional rocking chair/ottoman combo on one of our registries and an overstuffed glider chair/ottoman combo (shown right) on the other. Now I’m thinking maybe the best thing to do is to just wait and see if someone happens to purchase one of them as a gift for us off our registry.  If they do, then the problem is solved for me.  If no one doees, I can revisit this serious dilemma in early July after my shower and still order something (hopefully) in time for the baby girl’s arrival.

If you’ve got an answer, a recommendation or if you’re struggling with the same question… let me know!  Leave a comment and tell me what you think ChitChatMom should do.
