The Weekly Mom News for Saturday, April 25, 2009

by Chit Chat Mom on April 25, 2009

Saturday is one of my favorite days of the week.  In fact, if it wasn’t for Baby Sundays… Saturday would probably be my favorite day of the week.  On Saturday mornings the weekend is just getting started and no matter how full or empty your weekend plans may be,  there is this possibility for something unusual (hopefully in a good way) to happen.  For most of us it’s two days away from the office, away from work email and a reprieve from the boss or nosy cubicle neighbor.

Ahhh, Saturday.  It’s also a really good chance to catch up on some of the news you might have missed during the week.

ccm-newspapersIf you need to get caught up on the “mom news” of the week, here’s a little roundup of stories I thought you might find interesting…

“Pregnant Woman Hit by Car While Fleeing from Bear”

No joke.  Not pulling your leg.  This is not a new Lifetime Television for Women movie plot.  This actually happened.  A pregnant woman in Colorado Springs was indeed hit by a car (a slow moving one) when she tried to flee a bear that had begun following her on a hiking trail this past Thursday morning. “Apple Pulls ‘Baby Shaker’ iPhone App”
Source: The Huffington Post

Believe or not up until Wednesday there was an iPhone application available for sale ($0.99) that when used on your iPhone would make the sound of a crying baby until you shook it, “vigorously”. After receiving complaints, Apple pulled the app off of iTunes this week.  Get the full story online in the Huffington Post.

“Police Say Mom Ordered Daughters Out, Drove Off”
Source: ABC News

When mom Madlyn Primoff couldn’t take anymore, she didn’t.  She ordered her kids (two daughters ages 10 and 12) out of her car and drove off.  In the end both of the girls were safe and unharmed but mom Madlyn was arrested at her $2 million home in Scarsdale, New York hours later and charged with child endangerment.  You can read about the incident online at ABC.com.  There’s also a great follow up article from Emily Friedman called “When Moms Are Pushed too Far.”

“Mom Swap: Pig Suckles Baby Tigers at Zoo”
Source: The Today Show – NBC News

Okay, this story may not be about “moms” in the typical sense… since it’s not about human moms.  However, it’s cute and not disturbing like the rest of the odd-ball mom stories to hit the news this week.  It’s also a testament to the flexibility and range of a “mothers love”.  A sow (mother pig) in Thailand has “adopted” two tiger cubs, allowing them to nurse right along side her own piglets while two of her own little ones are doing the same with a mama tiger.  Okay… maybe it’s more odd than cute, but it is intriguing.  It’s an intentional move by the Thai zoo to try and make the tigers more calm by integrating them with other species early in life.  Be sure to check out the pics and read the entire story on the Today Show website.
