Before I tell you about the book “Babywise”, I should probably be upfront about my love of reading. I love love love to read. Always have and imagine that until my eyes give out (from hours of reading) I always will. Now that I’m preggers my choice in what to read has shifted dramatically. You can now find me almost every Saturday morning in a Barnes & Noble or Borders bookstore looking for my next book in the pregnancy and parenting aisle.
My most recent read (I finished it last night) was “On Becoming Babywise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep”. Admittedly I had no idea what “Babywise” really was. I’d heard the term thrown around before and I knew it had something to do with getting your little one to sleep at night. I had no idea that it really is all about feeding your baby. Specifically it’s about PDF… or parent directed feeding. Basically, the book (written by two medical professionals) details how using parent directed feeding you can help to create a schedule for your little starting almost immediately following birth. For someone like me who loves schedules, clocks, calendars and all the things that in my opinion keep life running smoothly… this book made total sense.
Now, if you are someone who is a little less structured the book may feel too regimented. Except that the authors are constantly reminding the reader to remain flexible (especially when you have your little bundle of joy on a plane). If you’re about to be a first time parent I would definitely recommend taking the time to read this book. In fact, it’s the one book I’ve read that I really hope my hubby will take the time to read (or at least browse through). Now who’s to say if I will actually end up succeeding with a PDF (parent directed feeding) schedule. I might try it and find that it just doesn’t work for me (it calls for letting baby cry it out a little and not immediately try to soothe them with food) or I might find that it just doesn’t work for the baby girl. However, even if it doesn’t work out, it at least gives me a starting point.
If you want to read it for yourself you can find it at bookstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders or online at Amazon.com.

Babywise is the ONLY book the AAP has ever publicly come out against. I’m amazed it is still sold in stores. If you read as voraciously as you seem, if you do nothing else, please read this:
http://ezzo.info (please read this site if you do nothing else today!) http://www.ezzo.info/index.htm
Remember your baby will only be little for a very, very short time and you can’t go back and redo it.
JustAMom… thanks so much for your comment. I will definitely check out the website you suggested. I understand that the idea of PDF may face opposition and to be honest… I just don’t know enough yet, so any recommendations readers can give me is great! The overall feeling that I came away with after reading “Babywise” was that maintaining an order of feeding time, wake time and sleep time would provide baby with an expectation of what would come next. I would certainly never do anything to harm her health for the sake of keeping a schedule that benefited me or to successfully follow a book. Thanks again for your comment!
